11 People Caught in Connection With Alleged Marriage Scam

(ConservativeHub.com) – Most people seem to hold marriage in high esteem as a starting point to build a family and have a lifelong partner. However, it can also be a stepping stone towards obtaining US citizenship for others. Even though getting married solely to become an American citizen is illegal, people still try it every year. The Department of Justice (DOJ) just announced it indicted 11 people for running a scam agency arranging marriages to help immigrants evade immigration requirements.

On Thursday, April 7, the US Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts released the names of the 11 individuals who ran a fraudulent marriage agency out of California. The crew included Philippine and Brazilian nationals who lived in both California and Massachusetts. According to the press release, the agency charged $20,000 to $30,000 per arranged marriage.

The New York Post shared more about this crazy scheme:

The sham agency would allegedly coach the couples to convince immigration officials their marriages were legitimate and even stage pictures to back up their made-up stories. If convicted of conspiring to commit marriage fraud, the individuals could owe up to a $250,000 fine and spend five years in prison.

The DOJ diligently caught these alleged criminals, protecting against what US Attorney Rachael Rollins called a threat to the “integrity of our nation’s lawful immigration system.”
