(ConservativeHub.com) – From Facebook’s refusal to host a story about Hunter Biden to Twitter’s history of slapping warnings on the president’s posts, it’s been a rough year for right-leaning voices online. Now, two new alternative platforms strive to create a new environment where everyone has the right to speak their minds.
Parler, founded by John Matze and Jared Thomson in 2018, is one of the biggest contenders. It seeks to replace Twitter altogether. After gaining nearly 1 million users in a week earlier in 2020, it certainly seems to be fulfilling that goal.
Gab also markets itself to people who want to speak freely, stating it “champions free speech, individual liberty and the free flow of information.” It’s grown very popular over the last six months; even President Trump himself has an account.
It is important to note that neither of these options is truly “censorship-free.” Virtually no social media site is — at least not in the sense that you can say absolutely anything without consequence.
Parler’s TOS indicates that users must still follow limited guidelines; the platform can and will remove content that constitutes a crime. Gab’s guidelines are similar but include a shortlist of other standards designed to protect users and the site from harm. Both sites say they are committed to preserving the right to political free speech, which is a refreshing change.
