(ConservativeHub.com) – On Tuesday, President Biden delivered his State of the Union address. His speech came at a time of high division within Congress and the looming prospect of starting his reelection campaign for 2024. However, these are some of the key takeaways from the evening.

Bipartisanship

President Biden focused a large part of his speech on the importance of unity and bipartisanship. He also proceeded to talk about the importance of the two parties continuing to collaborate in the new Congress, even noting that he is really looking forward to working with Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) who he congratulated for his new role.

Police Reforms

The speech focused on many different topics, but one was particularly emotional. President Biden took this opportunity to comment on the importance of police reforms, as became evident by the death of Tyre Nichols, who was beaten to death by Memphis police. His parents were also looking from the gallery during the speech which made this part of the speech quite emotional for attendees.

Medicare and Social Security

Biden also talked about how it was important to stop the attempts at cutting Medicare and Social Security. He said there were Republicans who were set on making cuts to these programs, which notably ended up angering some members of the GOP. Biden noted that he could have his office send them the relevant plans that proved his point. Still, as the speech proceeded, a moment of unity emerged as Biden conceded that both sides agreed that Medicare and Social Security should be off the table. This statement was met with cheers from both sides.
