He died peacefully in his sleep at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had been admitted for an aortic valve replacement surgery he ultimately could not undergo due to his deteriorating health.

Born James Ercolani in South Philadelphia in 1936, Darren began his career as a Columbia Pictures contract player. He rose to fame in 1959 with his role as “Moondoggie” in “Gidget,” a movie that significantly contributed to the surfing craze of the 1960s. He reprised his role in two sequels, “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” and “Gidget Goes to Rome.” “Gidget” not only cemented Darren’s status as a teen idol but also launched a cherished film series.

A Versatile Career

Darren’s acting portfolio spanned various genres and decades. He appeared in the 1961 World War II drama “The Guns of Navarone.” His career in prime-time television included starring roles in series like “The Time Tunnel” (1966-67). In the 1990s, he took on roles in “Melrose Place” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” where he portrayed Vic Fontaine, a crooning hologram.

“It was kind of a surprise to be quite honest with you,” Moret said, according to CBS News. “I mean, we knew that he was not well, but we didn’t expect this.”

Darren also branched out into directing, helming episodes of popular TV series such as “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Melrose Place.” Throughout his career, he remained a versatile performer, successfully transitioning between acting, singing, and directing.
