AOC Faces Scrutiny From House Ethics Committee

AOC Under Scrutiny by House Ethics Committee

( – The laws of the United States bind lawmakers, but they also have additional rules and ethics they must abide by as influential people in our nation’s government. For instance, they can’t accept most gifts offered because doing so could quickly become a conflict of interest. But, one New York Representative appears to be under investigation ethics violations.

On Wednesday, December 7, the Committee on Ethics announced it was investigating New York House Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D). While the committee won’t take any actions until the next Congress begins in January, there has been significant buzz about what the nature of the inquiry could be.

Some reports, from The Epoch Times to The Business Insider, are suggesting the ethics investigation may be about AOC’s fall 2021 attendance at the Met Gala, an exclusive New York City event where celebrities raise money for the museum. Tickets to the party typically range between $30,000 to $35,000, so the committee could construe accepting a ticket as a gift as a serious violation of congressional rules. While there are exceptions to the gifting rules for some charity functions, the Met Gala is exclusive and hosted by the for-profit company Condé Nast. At this point, however, there has been no official confirmation on what the investigation is about.

This announcement followed shortly after the Office of Congressional Ethics began looking into whether Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) violated the same rule for attending the Met Gala in 2016, according to the Business Insider.

A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez was reported by Forbes saying in a statement that the congresswoman “takes ethics incredibly seriously” and has always declined donations from “lobbyists, corporations or other special interests.”
