ConservativeHub.com) – On Wednesday, July 17, President Joe Biden’s administration announced $5 billion in federal grants, which are going to be used to replace old bridges in 16 states. The bridges will either be improved or replaced as part of the large infrastructure law.

The project aims to aid in the improvement of bridges across the country, with the largest project being estimated to be around $1.4 billion. The $1.4 billion will be used to replace two lift bridges that connect Interstate 5 traffic over the Columbia River. In December, the bridges also received $600 million, as they were defined as the “worst trucking bottleneck” in the region by Pete Buttigieg, the Department of Transportation Secretary.

Other bridge projects, such as the Sagamore Bridge, the Interstate 83 South bridge, and the Interstate 10 bridge project in Alabama will be receiving at least $500 million. On Wednesday, Buttigieg was planning to visit one of these projects.

Buttigieg has pointed out that these bridges have a large impact, not only on the regions they’re in, but also on the United States economy. He noted that their current condition would require large investments in order to ensure people’s safety and the proper functioning of the supply chains.

The grants are part of the 2021 $1.2 trillion infrastructure law that Biden signed. The law had originally allocated $40 billion to be used over the next five years in bridges. This is the largest investment in this type of infrastructure in many years.

During his reelection campaign, Biden often touted his infrastructure law.
