Biden Claims US Is Committed to Protecting Taiwan

Biden Promises to Help Taiwan Defend Against China

( – The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) founded the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, forcing the country’s former government to flee to Taiwan. China claims the tiny island nation as a breakaway territory and implemented a “One China” policy to bolster that claim. Chinese officials recently upped the ante in the region by holding military exercises near Taiwan in August and violating its airspace with 19 warplanes in September. Amid this backdrop of aggression, President Joe Biden promised to come to Taiwan’s aid in the event of a Chinese military incursion.

Biden made the bold statement during a town hall hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday, October 21. Cooper asked Biden whether the United States would come to Taiwan’s defense should China launch a military attack. Biden answered in the affirmative, adding, “We have a commitment” to come to Taiwan’s aid should it become necessary.

Fox News spoke to experts about recent Chinese aggression. They reportedly stated that China wants to test the Biden administration’s resolve following the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.

World Politics Institute head and former Trump defense official Dr. James Anderson told Fox China periodically increases pressure on Taiwan to “probe weaknesses” and “test [American] resolve.” Continuing, he said the Biden administration’s “sloppy and unfortunate disaster” in Afghanistan probably sparked recent military escalations directed at Taiwan from Communist China.

It’s unclear whether or not Biden intends to follow through with his vow. However, defense Secretary Lloyd Austin evaded reporters’ questions the following day, telling them he wouldn’t “engage in any hypotheticals with respect to Taiwan.” Press Secretary Jen Psaki also refused to confirm Biden’s comments, instead insisting that “our policy has not changed” regarding Taiwan.

What do you think? Is Biden’s rhetoric creating an increased risk of future Chinese aggression?
