(ConservativeHub.com) – President Joe Biden called for unity following the alleged assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump during a Saturday, July 13 rally. Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden emphasized the need to avoid violence and argued that regardless of how strong people’s convictions are, they should never lead to violence.
The plea followed a shooting during Trump’s rally by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks in Pennsylvania. The shooting resulted in a bullet grazing Trump’s ear, while one person was killed and two others critically injured. Biden in his statement pushed for unity and argued that there was nothing more important at this time than all of them “standing together.”
Biden said previously that he and Trump had a “good” conversation after the incident, and Trump later posted “UNITE AMERICA!” on Truth Social.
Biden has previously condemned all forms of violence, including the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband, and a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This stance was reiterated during his recent statements. He added that the “power of change” belonged in the hands of Americans but not in the hands of a “would-be assassin.”
He urged Americans to recommit to the values that make the nation special, including dignity, respect, and rejecting hate.
Following the incident, several investigations were launched and Biden warned that they should wait for conclusions relating to the affiliations and motives of the shooter instead of jumping to conclusions.
Biden’s campaign suspended communications following the shooting and were set to resume on Monday. The Republican National Convention has also been underway this week.
