COVID Mutation Becoming Dominant Force

( – Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the FDA’s former head, warned the country about a new strain of the COVID-19 virus that led to renewed quarantines and restrictions in the United Kingdom (UK) during a December 20 interview.

The fact this strain appears more contagious than previous ones is a major problem. Fortunately, health experts don’t believe it is deadlier. However, if it reaches the United States, its increased infection rate could overburden health systems, indirectly causing a spike in deaths.

Of particular concern is this strain’s spread to Australia, Belgium, Gibraltar, and Holland. Although only a small number of cases have been detected outside the UK, health experts warn it has the potential to become a dominant strain of the virus.

More than 100 countries require testing of any passengers traveling from the UK. Additionally, at least eight countries have enacted restrictions or bans on travelers from the UK. However, so far, the United States hasn’t announced any such measures, alarming some US officials.

New York’s Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo pointed out that JFK airport alone receives about half a dozen flights a day from the UK, leaving Americans unnecessarily vulnerable to this new COVID-19 strain.

Things have begun improving in the United States with the recent rollout of two coronavirus vaccines. It would be devastating if this new strain took hold before enough people receive vaccines for the country to reach herd immunity.
