Deadly Car Crash Kills Soldier and His Family Overseas

( – Many believe America owes a solemn debt to members of its armed services and their family members. Sadly, a base commander serving in South Korea had to call on personnel and family members to stand firm recently after a Boston soldier, his wife, and their young son perished in a roadway accident.

On Wednesday, November 3, the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command identified the victims as Army Specialist Luis Taveras, 27, Lisbeth Taveras, 30, and Luis Taveras, 16 months. On the night of November 1, the family car collided with a locally operated tow truck outside US Army Garrison Camp Humphreys.

Investigators told Stars and Stripes the Taveras’ automobile was traveling around a curve on a narrow road when the accident occurred. Emergency rescue personnel pronounced all three family members dead at the scene.

Nineteenth Expeditionary Force commander Gen. Steven Allen vowed the unit would come together as an “Army team” and provide “support and assistance” as personnel and family members struggle with the loss. “No words can accurately express the pain” the Taveras family’s friends and relatives will have to endure.

Spc. Taveras served four years of active duty in the US Army. He had been in South Korea since June, where he worked as a chemical equipment mechanic and quartermaster.
