Donald Trump Searching for Worthy Liz Cheney Challenger

(ConservativeHub.com) – Republicans have done what they could to rein in Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) since she sided with Democrats and voted to impeach former President Donald Trump earlier this year. House Republicans ousted her as the head of the House Republican Caucus in May, and several Republican committees in her home state of Wyoming voted to censure her.

On July 23, Politico reported that Trump advisors held private discussions with potential Republican challengers to Cheney’s congressional seat in the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.

Trump is set to meet with two top contenders, Wyoming state Rep. Chuck Gray and attorney Darin Smith, this week at his New Jersey Trump National Golf Club Bedminster. The two men have recently emerged as the clear favorites in the race to unseat Cheney.

According to Trump advisors, not only does the former president need to decide which Wyoming candidate to endorse, but he must also push back against any other Republican contenders and unite the base behind one strong candidate. Cheney continues to raise massive amounts of campaign funding and could present a formidable challenge to anyone seeking to replace her.

Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., have made separate trips to Wyoming to meet with potential Cheney challengers. Don Jr. is expected to attend this week’s Bedminster meeting.

Trump plans to interview other potential candidates in the upcoming weeks. GOP donor Chris Ekstrom, who runs a super PAC attempting to unseat Cheney, said the Wyoming primary “is the highest priority of the cycle.”

May the best candidate win.
