Ukrainians Conserve Electricity Amid Conflict
(ConservativeHub.com) – People in Ukraine are reportedly struggling with the regular onslaught of attacks from the Russians and with a lack of access to stable sources of electricity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported Russia has taken out one-third of the electricity generation plants in the country. Ukrainian officials are now calling on residents to conserve energy whenever possible to avoid losing access to electricity.
Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine’s energy minister, accused Russia of conducting 300 strikes against the nation’s infrastructure in over a week since October 10. According to Reuters, he explained the damage required a 20% reduction in electricity usage. The minister noted citizens had voluntarily lowered their consumption, but he foresaw a need for forced rolling blackouts and conservation.

The government has already begun taking steps to avoid more severe issues. In Kyiv and Kharkiv, officials reduced power consumption by trains and public transport using the electric-powered system. They also put the whole country under an order to limit energy usage between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm. Still, some areas have suffered through complete blackouts.
The World Health Organization warned in a statement of an impending crisis in Ukraine should energy issues persist into the winter. It stated energy supply problems could become “a matter of life or death.”
