(ConservativeHub.com) – Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has received harsh criticism from former President Donald Trump’s ex-spokesperson, Sarah Matthews, for “bend[ing] the knee” by announcing she’d vote for Trump.
Speaking to MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Sunday, May 26, Matthews said that Haley had been “building momentum” and could have emerged as a “leader” in a “post-Trump Republican Party” but had chosen to “bend the knee [and] kiss the ring” similarly to many fellow Republicans.
Matthews added that it was Trump who said, “They always bend the knee,” adding her belief that Haley’s statements were “disappointing” but “not surprising.”
Matthews’s comments reference remarks Trump made after House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn) endorsed him in January.
Last week, Haley, who had outlasted all of Trump’s other GOP primary contenders, announced that she’d vote for Trump in November.
Since Haley made the announcement, some Republicans and ex-Trump aides have publicly criticized the former South Carolina Governor.
Anthony Scaramucci, former White House communications director, declared Haley has “no backbone,” while former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger (Illinois) described her actions as “pathetic.”
However, Matthews had been a vocal supporter of Haley, wanting the former South Carolina Governor to emerge as the GOP’s Presidential nominee.
Since Haley’s announcement, many have suggested she did what she did to set her political future in stone.
However, Matthews is reportedly skeptical that Trump’s fan base would ever support Haley. She said while she didn’t believe Haley would ever endorse Biden, she thought the former South Carolina Governor would have declined to support Trump.
