A 20-year-old man who was scheduled for a hearing on firearms charges allegedly detonated an explosive device in the lobby of the Santa Maria Courthouse in California on Wednesday. AP reported that a total of five individuals were injured, but the LA Times reported the number as six.
The suspect, wearing body armor, allegedly threw a bag at the courthouse screening station, causing it to explode and fill the courthouse with smoke. The swift response from law enforcement led to the man’s immediate detention. The Los Angeles Times reported that the suspect, identified as Nathaniel McGuire, was taken into custody and charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder and possession of explosive devices.

Impact on Judicial Process
The incident prompted the evacuation of a five-block radius around the courthouse, including local businesses, residences, and a school. The courthouse and surrounding city buildings were shut down for the day to ensure public safety while authorities searched for additional explosive devices. California Gov. “At this point, we do believe this to be a local incident, involving a local resident, with a local grievance,” said a spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
