(ConservativeHub.com) – The Detroit city council has had quite the year so far, at least in terms of corruption. Federal prosecutors recently accused Councilman André Spivey and an unnamed staffer of accepting bribery payments totaling more than $35K from 2016 to 2020. In addition, Councilmember Gabe Leland received 30 months probation earlier this summer after pleading guilty to felony misconduct. Finally, topping off the summer’s events, FBI agents raided the homes and Detroit City Hall offices of two Democratic councilmembers this week.
On August 25, the FBI executed search warrants on City Councilmembers Scott Benson and Janeé Ayers. The full scope of the federal investigation remains unknown, but The Detroit News shared reports from unnamed sources saying the raids centered on allegations of corruption involving the City of Detroit’s towing services, along with bribery allegations. For now, the search warrants and accompanying probable cause affidavits remain under a court seal.

Federal agents also raided the homes of Benson and Ayers’ chiefs of staff and other city employees. Both of the Democrats targeted by the FBI face re-election next year.
According to Fox News, the raids represent the largest citywide corruption investigation into Detroit City officials since 2013, when a Detroit jury convicted former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on two dozen charges, including extortion, mail fraud, racketeering, and other felonies.
As of Friday, August 27, federal investigators haven’t charged Benson, Ayers, or their staff members.
