FDA Warns People Not To Cook Chicken With NyQuil

However, recent reports have suggested there’s a challenge on social media encouraging people to cook chicken in NyQuil. Sometimes referred to as “sleepy chicken,” the concoction is far from appetizing. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the dangers of partaking in the challenge.
NyQuil is an over-the-counter cold medication containing acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and doxylamine. The FDA explains that boiling the syrup concentrates and changes it, creating a different substance. Consuming NyQuil-infused meat could cause dire side effects due to unknown drug alterations.
Individuals don’t actually have to eat the chicken to suffer ill side effects from the trend. According to the FDA, as the concoction cooks, the hazardous vapors become airborne, adding to the risks, including potential lung damage. Because of these added dangers, anyone trying the challenge might ingest several times the safe dosage amount while completely unaware they’ve done so.

In a tweet on September 20, the NyQuil account recognized the current concerns over the trend and discouraged consumers from participating. The company also directed users to follow label directions.
According to Buzzfeed, the FDA’s news release might inadvertently have caused the challenge to trend after it had essentially died out in January. The outlet reported that as of September 21, there were no verified cases of illnesses or deaths from the trend. Snopes also questioned whether NyQuil chicken was a real trend, suggesting it may have simply originated as a joke that went viral. A few videos have reportedly popped up in the last several years, but it’s unknown whether anyone is currently participating in this alleged challenge.
