(ConservativeHub.com) – An elementary school teacher in Florida is reportedly being investigated after showing in a classroom a Disney movie that featured a gay character. According to a Huffpost article, the teacher said that the children’s parents signed permission forms allowing them to watch PG-rated films, so she didn’t expect there to be a problem.

Jenna Barbee, fifth-grade teacher from Hernando County, has defended her choice to have her students watch the Disney film “Strange World” during an earth science lesson. However, Shannon Rodriguez, who is a parent on the school board, reportedly complained about the showing. This has led to an investigation by Florida’s Department of Education and the school.

In a TikTok video, Barbee defended her action, saying she didn’t choose the film because it had a gay character in it, but rather because it was relevant to the class’s studies of earth science and ecosystems. Rodriguez argued during a school board meeting, however, that the film that had been shown opened the gateway for the teacher to discuss with students’ topics deemed inappropriate for the classroom. According to Fox News, Barbee claimed that students were talking about same-sex relationships already and that teachers wouldn’t be able to block these conversations. She further argued that a parent’s right to completely guard their child against LGBTQ discussions is non-existent the moment that child attends a public school.

Barbee, in an interview on “CNN This Morning,” argued that what Rodriguez and many others are missing is that they are not a part of the school system and that the things Rodriguez is claiming show her ignorance and the fact that she has not volunteered in the school at all. She further argued that these students are having these conversations because of social media and that they are talking amongst themselves about these topics.
