Former Honduras Leader Placed Under Arrest

(ConservativeHub.com) – Honduras is one of the pathways for drugs entering the US. It’s in America’s best interest to ensure Honduras has a strong stance against drugs. When government officials become the bad guys, the US steps in. That’s what’s happened in the case of a former leader who’s accused of serious drug-related crimes.

Officials arrested former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández on February 15 at his home in Tegucigalpa. Officers brought him out in shackles, handcuffs, and a bulletproof vest. His arrest warrant came from the US after a request for his extradition.

Hernández is likely to face charges for drug trafficking and related crimes stemming from accusations by Honduran Security Minister Ramon Sabillón that he worked with cartels to move drugs and adulterate public institutions. Sabillón said Hernández’s actions harmed the country’s justice system and created “social deterioration.”

During Hernández’s brother’s trial for drug trafficking and weapons charges, testimony revealed the former president’s connections. The brother, Juan Antonio Hernández, received a life sentence for his crimes.

Hernández was the president of Honduras starting in 2014. He remained in office until January when Xiomara Castro took over the position. Hernández denies all allegations against him and maintains the statements made against him were retaliatory.
