(ConservativeHub.com) – The leaders of the world’s wealthiest countries concluded their G7 summit over the weekend. Hosted in the United Kingdom, the summit was the first in-person meeting since the start of the pandemic, and the heads of state covered a wide range of topics during their discussions. On Sunday, June 13, the group issued a joint statement covering areas of agreement and remaining differences.
The G7 Communiqué made four direct mentions of China. They covered various sensitive issues, including the origins of COVID-19, China’s market practices, human rights issues in Hong Kong and Xinjiang, and the China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

The G7 leaders’ statement called for a “timely, transparent… and science-based” Phase 2 investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO) into COVID-19’s origin. The communiqué called for future talks to address China’s “challenging” policies, which serve to “undermine” the global economy’s “fair and transparent operation.”
The statement also called on China to “respect human rights” and other “fundamental freedoms” in Xinjiang and Hong Kong. It also discussed the importance of maintaining “free and open” operations in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas.
The question of whether this will help the G7 move toward change remains open, considering China’s lack of cooperation so far. However, it’s noteworthy that China has already denounced the communiqué. According to Reuters, urged G7 leaders to “stop slandering China” and interfering in its internal affairs.
