(ConservativeHub.com) – On April 18, Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) officially endorsed former President Donald Trump’s 2024 White House campaign following his meeting with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R).
Gooden took to Twitter to write that his decision to endorse Trump had come after “careful consideration,” adding that his meeting DeSantis was “positive.” He noted that while he respected DeSantis along with his performance as the leader of his state, he believed that Trump was the best choice among the possible GOP candidates because he was known for his “commitment to putting America first.”
A number of lawmakers have expressed their support for Trump in recent weeks. For instance, West Virginia governor Jim Justice recently stated on social media that he was backing the former president. Florida GOP Rep. John Rutherford also revealed his was endorsing Trump last week.
Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) also announced that he would support Trump in his third presidential campaign. Others, such as Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), and more have also expressed their support. Many of the endorsements he’s received have come after his recent criminal charges.
Gooden in his statement claimed that Trump would be the only one who could help fight off “the leftist forces that threaten to destroy” the country and that he could help ensure the prosperity of the nation.
Trump announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election in November of 2022. The Hill reports that he is currently leading in most GOP polls, with DeSantis often coming in second place. DeSantis has not yet announced his intentions for 2024, but it is widely speculated that he will be joining the race in early summer.
