(ConservativeHub.com) – On March 17, GOP senators announced they would be unveiling a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution which would attempt to block President Joe Biden’s plan to provide student debt relief. Currently, the plan is under review by the US Supreme Court.

The Congressional Review Act would give Congress the power to analyze new regulations from government agencies and potentially toss them through the use of a majority vote, according to a report from The Hill. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Joni Ernst (R-IA) are the top lawmakers behind the Act.

A White House spokesperson said regarding the resolution that it is a “shame” that GOP lawmakers continued to fight against a measure that could provide “critical relief to millions of their own constituents.” They added that Biden, Vice President Harris, and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona are able to understand how this relief would help millions of American households who are in need of help.

After a report from the Government Accountability Office which showed that the Biden student loan program would be subjected to the CRA, the senators introduced the new resolution. Responding to this decision, the White House noted that the student loan forgiveness plan was founded on “the Department of Education’s decades-old authority” provided by the legislature and that it has never before been “subject to the Congressional Review Act.” They added that the GAO’s decision went against the longstanding practice that followed.
