(ConservativeHub.com) – Following the death of Laken Hope Riley, a University of Georgia nursing student, there has been an increase in calls from the GOP to have the southern border shut down, according to a recent Newsmax report.

On February 23, police arrested Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, who is the suspect in the murder case. Ibarra allegedly entered the United States illegally in September 2022 through El Paso, Texas, and had been released into the country because of the limits in detention space.

On February 22, Riley was found dead in an area on the campus of the University of Georgia. She was reportedly wearing jogging clothes. The reports have noted that the death was caused by blunt force trauma.

Ibarra is facing several charges in connection to this case, including felony murder, murder with malicious intent, as well as a number of assault, battery, and kidnapping charges. Ibarra was also arrested in New York five months ago on child injury charges. His immigration status has not yet been confirmed. Newsmax reported, however, that his brother was taken into custody for alleged green card fraud.

Some Republicans have been vocal following the incident, claiming that it is the policies of the Biden administration that have led to the security risks increasing. Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga., specifically stated that Riley’s death was a result of the policies of the administration and even claimed that stricter border control and immigration laws could have helped avoid this incident. He added that the blood of Laken Riley was on the hands of Alejandro Mayorkas and President Joe Biden. Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind. also spoke on the issue, asking how many more citizens would need to lose their lives before Biden would “secure the border.”
