(ConservativeHub.com) – The GOP is planning on creating a new select subcommittee that will be focused on investigating the “weaponization” of the federal government, particularly in cases revolving around former President Trump and the multiple probes and investigations he is facing.

The panel is going to be overlooking the investigations led by the Department of Justice both in regards to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, as well as to the case relating to the classified documents seized by the FBI from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate this past August.

The subcommittee is set to fall under the House Judiciary Committee and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is widely expected to become the Judiciary Committee Chairman. Jordan has sent over 100 letters to both the DOJ and the FBI in which he informs them of the investigations that they should expect to face.

The Republican party already started an investigation into the FBI last year. The structure of the investigation follows the 1970s investigation regarding civil liberties violations.

Depending on the language used when the Select Subcommittee is established the panel could have the authority to even overlook some of the ongoing investigations. This subcommittee was part of the negotiations within the GOP that allowed Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to become the Speaker after the 15th ballot.

As part of the work discussed, lawmakers on the 13-member panel would be allowed to access the information that the House Intelligence Committee has access to.

There will also be five Democrats within the committee who will be decided upon through consultation with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).
