( – Kathy Nickerson, a licensed clinical psychologist, with expertise in relationships and marriage advice recently commented on a viral Reddit story relating to a spouse’s habit of being always late which messed with his wife’s birthday dinner plans.

In her statement, she pointed out that every behavior was in some way a form of communication, especially when it related to someone choosing not to get ready for someone else’s birthday. As she noted this action was essentially sending out the message that they did not consider that person very important to them.

The story the psychologist was commenting on was first shared with a 40-year-old woman on Reddit who shared how she was planning to have a birthday dinner celebration at a nice restaurant at 7 p.m. As she said, knowing that the drive to the restaurant was around 20 minutes long she had planned to leave the house at 6:30 p.m. in order to make it on time and pick up her father.

However, her 43-year-old husband had decided that he needed to do work on his car only half an hour before they were set to go. By 6:30 p.m. she was already by the door ready to go with her kids while he was still working on his car. Her husband had not showered or gotten ready and he was always the last one to get ready when they needed to go somewhere.

By 6:50 p.m. the woman decided to leave him behind and to just go to the restaurant. She shared how important her birthday was for her and that she found it unacceptable that her husband had kept them waiting for over 20 minutes.
