Jen Psaki Comments on Calls for No-Fly Zone

( – Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced countries worldwide to reckon with how willing they are to get involved in the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continuously called on Western countries, including the United States, to establish a no-fly zone over his nation to cut down on the Russian airstrikes plaguing his nation. However, many lawmakers and politicians are against this plea.

On Wednesday, March 16, Zelenskyy made a speech asking the US once again to establish a no-fly zone. However, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki reiterated President Joe Biden’s stance on issue, saying that while the administration understands Zelenskyy’s position, they still have no plans to take this step. “We are not interested in getting into World War III,” she said. If NATO did establish a no-fly zone, it would show the Alliance’s willingness to shoot down Russian planes, giving Putin a reason to shoot back.

The New York Post shared how the White House is not the only one opposed to the no-fly zone. For example, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) recently warned of the dangers of a no-fly zone while speaking with ABC News’s “This Week,” also saying there was a strong possibility it could lead to a larger war.

However, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) told Greta Van Susteren on “Full Court Press” the US shouldn’t reveal its hand right now and urged the government to keep its options open about sending troops to Ukraine in the future. Additionally, some former US commanders have signed an open letter to the Biden administration to establish the zone, saying it would “avert and deter Russian bombardment” that has killed many Ukrainians.

What do you think? Do you support a no-fly zone or not?
