Jen Psaki Confirms Plans to Nix Title 42

( – There have been multiple blunders during the first half of President Joe Biden’s term, but the surge in illegal immigration may be highest on that list. Title 42, a Trump-era public health policy, allowed Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents to turn back immigrants if they posed a suspected risk to Americans’ health. The policy likely reduced the number of undocumented immigrants who actually made it over the border, but now, the CDC is ending the policy, despite a bipartisan pushback against the move.

Psaki Doubles Down on Ending Title 42

On Wednesday, April 20, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki spoke with reporters about various topics, including immigration. When asked about the possibility of delaying the end of Title 42, she emphasized Title 42 enforcement is a public health policy from the CDC set to end on May 23. She added any extension of Title 42 would “require congressional action,” saying the current administration would be “happy to have that conversation.”

Psaki also added the White House is preparing for the likely increase in immigrant encounters as temperatures warm and Title 42 disappears.

Bipartisan Pushback

Republicans have asked the Biden administration to buckle down on the US-Mexico border security since Biden’s inauguration in January 2021. Now, Democrats are finally following suit, especially those facing tough midterm elections. On Monday, April 18, Democratic aides are calling for the delay of the end of Title 42, highlighting the number of lobbyists pushing for the same goal.

It seems even most Americans want Title 42 to stick around a while longer. According to a Morning Consult poll, 56% of US voters disagree with the decision to end the policy, the strongest opposition to one of President Biden’s moves Morning Consult has measured since his term began.

Even Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), a longtime Biden ally, recently told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” the president should reconsider rolling back Title 42 because COVID-19 infections are on the rise again near his home state.

However, because Psaki indicated Congressional action would be needed to extend the policy, is Biden even within his power to make any changes on his own?

Will Biden’s “Plan” Be Enough to Maintain Balance at the Border?

While Psaki emphasized the White House is implementing plans to deal with the border, many Americans still question if the number of migrants will continue to rise if the border policy ends. The Biden administration may need to get more serious and transparent about border control plans if it wants to keep any voters happy in the coming months.
