(ConservativeHub.com) – The COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions have raised some unique legal issues over the last 20 months. For instance, an Illinois judge stripped a mother of her visitation rights earlier this month because of her decision not to vaccinate against the virus.
Chicago mother Rebecca Firlit and her ex-husband participated in a virtual court hearing focused on child support issues. Firlit and her ex share custody of their 11-year-old son.
Firlit told local reporters that Cook County Judge James Shapiro asked her whether or not she was vaccinated. She advised the court she had not received a shot due to her history of adverse vaccine reactions. She also told the court her doctor advised her not to get vaccinated.
Nevertheless, Judge Shapiro made the choice to temporarily revoke Firlit’s custody until she received the vaccine. Her husband received his vaccinations.
Firlit’s attorney Annette Fernholz contested the August 11 order, and on August 31, Judge Shapiro issued a new ruling vacating portions of his earlier decision. Fernholz attributes the judge’s reversal to public pressure generated through the media.
Firlit expressed surprise and gratitude at the judge’s reversal. She hasn’t seen her son since August 10. Following the new court order, she said, “I’m going to see my son right now.”
