(ConservativeHub.com) – According to The Hill, Republican senators have warned that the legal woes that former President Donald Trump is facing could potentially make the GOP look bad if he ends up winning the party nomination. These concerns come as Republicans are hoping to be able to win back the Senate in 2024.

Trump is currently facing criminal charges in the case brought forth by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) regarding the hush money payments he was accused of making ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Many GOP members have claimed that the probe and case are completely politically motivated. Still, they acknowledge that it is likely that this case is going to be damaging to their chances in the 2024 election if Trump is still facing these charges over the course of the next year or so.

Trump is expected to have his next in-person court appearance in December. According to The Hill, this means the case could still be ongoing in 2024. It is also possible that further accusations could be brought forth against him by the Department of Justice and Fulton County, Ga.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AL) reportedly questioned whether it was a “bad look” for someone who’s been charged to be considered a “viable candidate.” Another unnamed Senator shared shared a more definitive view, saying that you don’t “want your candidates under a cloud of criminal prosecution.”

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) also noted, according to the outlet, that it’s problematic for any party to be “considered legitimate” to have such a prominent figure be someone who’s been indicted and been around other people who have been indicted or charged.

However, Romney has stated that he does not believe any of these legal troubles are actually going to affect the 2024 GOP primary race, and has argued that it is very likely that Trump will end up being the nominee in 2024.
