(ConservativeHub.com) – Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wy.) criticized Gov. Ron DeSantis’s recent comments regarding involvement in the Ukraine-Russia war not being of “vital national interests” to the U.S.

Cheney fired back against these comments in a statement, saying DeSantis is “wrong and seems to have forgotten the lessons of Ronald Reagan,” according to The New York Times. She said that Ukrainians are currently fighting for their freedom. She added that “surrendering” Russia and “refusing to defend freedom” puts America at risk.

Cheney had previously been attacked by former President Donald Trump and his allies after she became one of his vocal critics rejecting his claims regarding the 2020 presidential election. Now, she has rejected DeSantis’ reply to a Fox News questionnaire of potential 2024 presidential candidates that the U.S. should not provide more support in the war as it is not of vital national interests. Specifically, DeSantis in his response stated that there were other issues of vital national interest including border security, military readiness, energy security and independence, and “checking the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party.”

DeSantis is widely speculated to be considering placing a bid for the 2024 presidential race. However, he has not yet made any announcements regarding his presidential bid.

DeSantis is not the only GOP lawmaker to have expressed opposition to the levels of funding and support that the U.S. has offered Ukraine, with some claiming that the Biden administration should not have given a “blank check” to Ukraine.
