Marine Dies Trying to Help People After Highway Crash

( – Every day, the men and women in the US Armed Forces serve their country proudly. They do what they can to help those in need, whether those people are in America or abroad. Sadly, a young Marine recently lost his life while doing just that.

On Monday, December 6, a 20-year-old Marine based at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA, came across an accident on Interstate 5. Darryl Sheffey, 36, was in a vehicle crash that left his car disabled in the road. The Marine tried to help Sheffey and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman. That’s when a 47-year-old man, driving a box truck, collided with the SUV, killing the service member and injuring the occupants of the disabled vehicle.

Camp Pendleton released a statement later that afternoon confirming one of its Marines died in the accident. The statement said the Marines would withhold the service member’s identity for 24 hours pending notification of his next-of-kin. The base said its “deepest condolences are with the Marine’s family, friends, and unit service members.”

Emergency personnel took Sheffey and his passenger to a hospital to receive treatment. Authorities have arrested him, and after his release from the hospital, police will book him into jail on multiple felonies.
