Mass Shooting Leaves 10 People Injured

( – Gun violence is on the rise in the United States. Recent reports show she total number of deadly, high-victim shootings rose 55% in the first six months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The recent Fourth of July holiday saw 450 acts of gun violence, with as many as 150 individuals shot. New York City was hit particularly hard with 21 shooting incidents wounding 26 people.

On Saturday, July 31, two suspects fired numerous shots into a crowd outside a New York City barbershop, shooting and injuring 10 people. Security cameras captured footage of the suspects fleeing the scene and being picked up by two additional suspects on scooters.

James Essig, New York’s Chief of Detectives, characterized the incident as a “brazen, coordinated attack.” According to him, three of the victims were known members of the Bronx Trinitarios Gang, a Hispanic group involved in narcotics trafficking and violent crimes, including murder.

The incident took place just before 11:00 p.m. in the Queens neighborhood of Corona. New York Police Department Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes added the suspects likely knew the neighborhood, explaining their choice to wear masks and hooded sweatshirts.

The victims ranged in age from 19 to 72 years of age. None of them sustained life-threatening injuries, although one individual did sustain a gunshot wound to the stomach.
