(ConservativeHub.com) – GOP Senator Mitch McConnell (Ky.) is expected to have a tough year going forward as he will need to manage any potential altercation between the White House and the Republican House led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

Outside of Congress, he also remains one of former President Trump’s enemies. Trump has often called McConnell out for the decisions that he has made in the Senate. Lately, McConnell has faced opposition because of his support of the omnibus spending bill which passed through Congress last year. Many in the GOP were particularly critical of this decision as McConnell could have waited until the GOP won control of the House before passing any spending bills.

McConnell is expected to be leading efforts to get the party ahead so it can defeat the Democrats in future elections. After the party failed to recapture the Senate in 2022, it will now be up to McConnell to ensure that the GOP puts up a stronger fight in the coming years.

McConnell’s position in the Senate is also more precarious as his ability to make deals with the Democrats is now greatly limited. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is unlikely to support any partisan deals as his own position in the House might be questioned by House conservatives. The Hill reported that with the rules in the House also changing, a small group of conservatives could be enough to force a snap election.

It will also be up to McConnell to ensure that there are no defaults or government shutdowns. McConnell has long been opposed to those as he does not consider them the right way to run the country, according to GOP strategist Scott Jennings, as reported by The Hill.
