Multiple San Francisco Democrats Could Be Recalled

( – When one sits on a school board, the priority should be the district’s children, but sadly, that’s not always the case. Now, three San Francisco school board members could be recalled for their decisions over the past year.

In an unprecedented move, people in The Golden Gate City will vote on February 15 to determine whether or not to recall three liberal school board members. Two commissioners, Faauuga Moliga and Alison Collins, and school board President Gabriela López are up for recall.

The chief complaint sparking the recall is that instead of focusing on how best to get children back into the classroom amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the school board chose to start renaming schools and removing the names of historical figures they believed contributed to racism. Meanwhile, San Francisco children didn’t physically attend school for over a year, leading to criticisms and arguments that the absence of classroom teaching and interaction was more harmful to kids than sending them to school with precautions in place.

In a shocking twist, San Francisco Mayor London Breed (D) broke from her party to support the recall. “Sadly, our school board’s priorities have often been severely misplaced,” she said when asked about the measure. The mayor went on to say the city’s kids need to be the first priority.

Now, voters will get the chance to decide if they want to oust the three eligible members. If the recalls succeed, Breed will bring their replacements onto the board.
