(ConservativeHub.com) – Government and legal officials wasted no time launching investigations into the January 6 riot at the nation’s capital. The Department of Justice has handed down more than 500 criminal indictments so far. The US Senate released a comprehensive and bipartisan report on June 8, and multiple Congressional committees are looking into the incident.
That didn’t stop House Democrats from voting to create a select committee to join the fray. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced her eight appointments to the committee, including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), on July 1. That leaves Senate Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to recommend five additional individuals for the committee. The final say isn’t up to him, and even if he manages to get five more Republicans on the committee, the balance will still favor Democrats seven to six.

Cheney reportedly accepted her appointment without consulting McCarthy, leading him to question where her loyalties lie. As he pointed out, a Republican accepting a committee assignment from a Democrat was “unprecedented.”
However, Cheney has made her position regarding the January 6 incident crystal clear. Republicans recently removed her as head of the Republican Congressional Caucus for her ongoing insistence on blaming former President Donald Trump for the riot. She also joined Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) as one of only two Republicans to vote for creating a select committee in the first place.
However well-intentioned the creation of a select committee may or may not be, is there any reason for Americans to trust it to conduct a fair investigation when Pelosi has already padded it with the most outspoken Republican against Trump?
