Nancy Pelosi Warns Athletes Against Angering China

( – On February 4, the 2022 Winter Olympics began in Beijing amid concerns of human rights violations against the Uyghurs, which led to President Joe Biden staging a diplomatic boycott. The FBI subsequently warned athletes traveling to the country not to bring their personal cell phones but rather a burner phone to prevent Chinese officials from hacking their information. That doesn’t seem to be enough, though, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

On Thursday, February 3, ahead of the start of the Olympics games, Pelosi issued a dire warning to athletes competing abroad. “Do not risk incurring the anger of the Chinese government because they are ruthless,” she said, meaning they should avoid any political topics and not speak out about the human rights violations, lest they incur the wrath of the communist government.

Given all these precautions, one wonders why the US allowed athletes to attend the games in China to compete as it is. Pelosi and others have basically instructed them to keep their mouths shut or risk their safety.

Republicans wanted a full boycott of the Olympics and to keep our athletes home, but Biden stopped just short of meeting that request. Now, we must wait with bated breath through the end of the Olympic games and ceremonies, which conclude on February 20.
