North Korea Launches Submarine Missile Test

North Korea Reportedly Launches Submarine Missile Test

( – North Korea is no stranger to provoking tension with the United States and the neighboring countries of South Korea and Japan. Now, it appears that Pyongyang has taken things to a new level with a recent weapon test believed by some to be the most significant display of North Korean military might since President Joe Biden assumed office earlier this year.

On Tuesday, October 19, reports emerged from South Korea that North Korean military officials test-fired a missile from the nation’s east coast. The launching point was near a naval base housing the country‚Äôs submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) program. The launch coincided with a closed-door meeting between officials from the United States, South Korea, and Japan.

North Korean state media released a statement the following day confirming the test launch of an SLBM. Photographs accompanying the press release indicated that the missile system was the same one revealed during an arms exhibition in Pyongyang earlier in October.

An unnamed analyst told ABC News that North Korean President Kim Jong-un’s military is working to develop SLBMs as part of an effort to establish a more sustainable nuclear deterrent system to blackmail the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Analysts believe this to be the first test of this kind of weapon system in about two years.

North Korea’s SLBM’s, along with their intercontinental ballistic-missile systems, represent Pyongyang’s most significant military threat to the United States and its allies in the Korean Peninsula due to their long-range and ability to avoid detection.
