North Korea Says It Can “Shake the World” With Advanced Weapons

North Korea Says It Can

( – North Korea is taking an increasingly hostile stance concerning its testing of ballistic missiles. The launches have only accelerated since last year, giving the United States — and the rest of the world — cause for concern.

On Tuesday, February 8, North Korea boasted of its military might. In a statement, the nation’s Ministry of Foreign affairs claimed that other leaders react to the US with “submission and blind obedience,” while North Korea is the only country that “can shake the world by firing a missile with the U.S. mainland in its range.” North Korea launched a record seven missiles in January alone, despite a UN Security Council ban on such launches.

The above Reuters report points out that two of these weapons, the Hwasong-12 intermediate-range and the Hwasong-15 long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles, might be capable of reaching the US Pacific Territories and the US mainland, respectively.

Of the weapons tested, one that’s drawing particular concern is a hypersonic missile, one North Korea claims to have successfully launched on both January 5 and January 11. According to Bruce Bechtol, a former US Defensive Intelligence Agency officer, these weapons “have evade abilities better than anything [North Korea] tested thus far,” which could spell trouble for nearby countries, particularly South Korea.

The US State Department maintains it holds no ill intent towards North Korea and is trying to open dialogue with Pyongyang, with no success thus far.
