(ConservativeHub.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) expressed her opinions about a possible TikTok ban in a relatively unconventional way by officially joining the platform and sharing her first video on it.

According to The Hill, she stated in the introduction of her video, “This is not only my first TikTok, but it is a TikTok about TikTok.” From there, she proceeded to state that she did not believe that the social media platform should be banned and that if it was decided that the video-sharing app should be banned, it would be an “unprecedented” move.

She added that the United States had never before banned any social media company or stopped them from operating within the country. TikTok currently has more than 150 million Americans using it.

According to The Hill, her post came after lawmakers from both parties questioned TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew last week on how his company was going to be addressing the increased number of security concerns surrounding his social media app.

The app and its Chinese-based owner ByteDance faced a lot of criticism during Chew’s testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee from both parties. Some of the concerns and criticisms included the national security threat posed by the platform, data privacy, misinformation on the platform, and what the platform will do to address the safety of minors.

Ocasio-Cortez in her video pointed out that the reason they are calling for the app to be banned is because of the reportedly “egregious amount of data harvesting” but that a ban would not actually be addressing the “core of the issue.” She believes a better solution would be to prevent companies from being able to harvest data from US citizens without their consent.
