Oklahoma Governor Signs Major Abortion Legislation

(ConservativeHub.com) – On April 12, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt (R) signed a bill that will ban all abortions except in emergency cases where a mother’s life is in danger. Senate Bill 612 makes abortion a felony. Stitt noted he had promised to sign all pro-life bills he received.

The governor explained he feels elected officials have the duty to protect the right to life afforded in the US Constitution for all citizens, even the unborn. He recognized activist groups would try to challenge the law, but he upheld his convictions that this was the right thing to do.

The bill won’t go into effect until August. Doctors, not mothers, will face charges under this legislation. They’ll face fines of up to $100,000 and up to 10 years in prison for the felony charge.

In a statement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the measure was among the most restrictive in the country. She also said it was “unconstitutional,” adding the White House intends to oppose all legislative efforts of this nature.

The implementation of this restrictive bill comes as the US Supreme Court prepares to make a landmark decision that could impact abortion legislation throughout the country. Many restrictive laws such as this one end up before the courts, but the nation’s highest court could turn over the power to legislate abortion to the states, ending such litigation.
