Pelosi Considers New Options for Capitol Riot Investigation

( – Republicans successfully blocked an effort by Democrats to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6 riot at the US Capitol Building late last week. The final vote of 54 to 35 fell short of the required 60 votes for passage of the measure.

On Tuesday, June 1, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) discussed possible options for moving forward with a Democratic-led investigation in the House of Representatives.

Announced during a House Democratic Caucus call, Pelosi’s proposed choices included:

  • Having the Senate vote again on creating a January 1 commission;
  • Launching a House Select Committee;
  • Allowing current House committee investigations into the incident to continue; or
  • Appointing one committee to spearhead the January 6 investigation.

Whatever route Pelosi and House Democrats decide to take, one thing remains certain — the legitimacy of any investigation will remain questionable considering its partisan makeup. Democrats need to either develop a compromise Republicans can live with or let the Department of Justice and FBI continue taking the lead.
