Teen Helps Police Officer After He Gets Shot
(ConservativeHub.com) – An officer from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, found himself in a gunfight when trying to arrest a man for assault on October 1. The unnamed officer took bullets to the shoulder and wrist, leaving him in a precarious medical situation. Luckily, 17-year-old Ava Donegan was traveling through the area with her boyfriend and came to the officer’s aid. She helped him secure a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until emergency personnel could arrive.
The teen’s father, Devin Donegan, is a nurse who has instilled the importance of first aid in his daughter. According to a KMBC report, she credits him with her fast response, saying she acted on instinct from the informal training her dad had provided her whole life. It was pure luck that she happened to be in the right place at the right time to assist the policeman, and what she had just witnessed hadn’t scared her into immobilization. The young woman was visiting the area and admitted she’d never been that close to gunshots.

The Excelsior Springs Police Department reported in a Facebook post on October 3 that the officer had undergone two surgeries and had a third scheduled for the next day but was doing well. The department said doctors expected him to recover, and he was already counting the days until he could return to uniform. Another officer injured in the incident is also on the road to recovery.
