Queen Elizabeth II Passes Away -- What Now?

Queen Elizabeth Has Died – So What Happens Now?

(ConservativeHub.com) – On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II passed away after 70 years in the role. The moment the Queen died, a transfer of power occurred automatically, turning Prince Charles into King Charles III. Much more is happening as titles shift and the United Kingdom adjusts to being under the rule of a new monarch.

Those in line to take the throne all moved up in the hierarchy. Some of the changes happened instantaneously. For example, Prince William and his wife Kate became the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, adding to their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In addition, King Charles’s wife, Camilla, became the Queen Consort. King Charles recently handed over the title of Prince of Wales to William, which will mark him as the next in line to the throne.

The formal proclamation of the new king didn’t occur until September 10, when the Accession Council of approximately 200 members oversaw a private ceremony at St. James’s Palace. Charles pledged to dedicate himself to following his mother’s “inspiring” example for the rest of his life. In reply to the official oath sworn by King Charles, Council members replied, “God Save the King.” This ceremony marked the first time women have attended, including newly minted PM Liz Truss, former PM Theresa May, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, and Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt.

Everything will cap off with the coronation, which will not happen for some time. Queen Elizabeth was the monarch for 16 months before her crowning ceremony, according to AP News. The ceremony at Westminster Abbey will involve a religious service, music, and speakers. The Archbishop of Canterbury will crown the new king at the event’s peak.
