(ConservativeHub.com) – For decades, presidential candidates have spent time debating various political topics with each other for Americans to get a better understanding of where they stand. However, after the contentious 2020 campaign season and subsequent election, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and former President Donald Trump were unhappy with how the Commission on Presidential Debates ran the interactions. Now, the RNC is planning to vote on whether future GOP candidates will participate in the Commission’s sponsored debates.
On Thursday, January 13, Ronna McDaniel, the RNC Chairman, wrote a letter to the Commission informing them of the RNC plans to vote in February “to prohibit future Republican nominees from participating in CPD-sponsored debates.”
The Associated Press was one of the first news outlets to catch wind of this bold move:
The Republican National Committee said it is planning a rules change that would force presidential candidates to sign a pledge saying they will not participate in any debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. https://t.co/dC43pw0Kl9

McDaniel’s letter highlighted the RNC’s request for various debate reforms “that would restore trust in the debates process,” such as holding an interaction before early voting begins and having a transparent code of conduct for moderators. McDaniel emphasized the Commission implemented very few of the suggestions thus far. If the RNC does move forward with this vote, it’s still unclear what alternative they would offer. However, this bold move highlights many Republicans’ concerns over bias in these debates.
