(ConservativeHub.com) – A new poll, from Monmouth University that was held between January 26 and February 2, showed Florida Governor DeSantis has a significant lead over former President Trump in a hypothetical 2024 GOP matchup.
The Florida governor is widely considered to be the preferred candidate for most Republican demographics. According to this latest poll, around 53 percent of Republicans said they would like DeSantis to win the GOP nomination, whereas only 40 percent said the same about Trump.
The poll was answered by 566 respondents.
More specifically, DeSantis appears to be leading Trump in almost all of the big voting blocs in the party.
“Strong” Republicans preferred DeSantis with him receiving 49 percent of the support, whereas Trump only got 46 percent. Similarly, with “lean” Republicans, the results showed 60 percent to 32 percent support, with DeSantis clearly taking the lead. “Very conservative” voters also support DeSantis, 53 percent, over Trump, 43 percent. Finally, with moderate voters, DeSantis gained 51 percent of the support while Trump only received 38 percent.
Evangelical Republicans who had previously been key to Trump’s success during his 2016 presidential campaign, also seem to be preferring Trump (51 to 44 percent). Similarly, non-evangelical voters preferred DeSantis by 56 percent, whereas Trump only had 34 percent of non-evangelicals say that they would support him in the GOP primary against DeSantis.
Trump appears to be winning in two demographics. Those earning less than $50,000 a year and those 65 and older seemed to prefer Trump to DeSantis in this poll.
At this point, it’s still unknown whether or not DeSantis will actually make a bid for the White House. However, Independent Monmouth University Polling Institute Director Patrick Murray was quoted in the survey report saying that if DeSantis does run, it will be “difficult” for any other candidate to make themselves stand out.
