( – On Thursday, April 25, San Diego District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond took to X, formerly known as the social media platform Twitter, to describe his city as the border crisis’ “new epicenter.” He also slammed California for having brought this upon itself.

Desmond argued that San Diego was the “new epicenter for migrants and illegal immigration” and that the surge had resulted in the city leading each of the nine southern border sectors in April. He said that is something that they have not seen since the 1990’s.

On Wednesday, Desmond pointed out that in only one day, the Border Patrol agents had arrested 2,000 people who had crossed the border illegally, out of whom 206 were Chinese nationals. Since October, agents have apprehended around 215,000 individuals from a total of 75 different countries.

Desmond said during an interview with NewsNation that people had taken to just walking across the border, as Border Patrol agents were not empowered to block them from doing so. He added that Border Patrol agents currently were just processing them once they had managed to “walk across the border.”

The official also expressed concerns about an increase in migrants arriving in the US by boat. He said border agents actually do some vetting and fingerprinting with migrants who cross the US/Mexico border.

Desmond during his statements claimed that what was happening to California right now was self-inflicted and it is in part because the state provides migrants free health care, along with representation if they are being deported. Local law enforcement is also blocked from enforcing any immigration laws, he claimed.
