Sibling of US Citizen Detained in Russia Criticizes Biden

Family Member STEPS FOWARD – Puts Joe Biden To Shame!

( – When Elizabeth Whelan heard about the president and vice president calling the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, she was happy for her. But Whelan couldn’t help feeling upset that the White House never extended the same courtesy to her family. Whelan’s brother, Paul Whelan, has been in Russian custody since 2018, and she said she’d never had a phone call from anyone in the government.

Whelan explained that her family and more than 55 others would like the same outreach. They want attention regarding their loved ones who also remain trapped in Russia. She said her brother has spent three and a half years writing letters to presidents and members of Congress. Yet, Cherelle Griner received a phone call from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris just one day after she told the media she was disappointed not to hear from the administration.

She said families with fewer resources than the Griners should still receive attention for their cases. The unfairness of the situation isn’t sitting well with her or other families, and she said the White House should rectify it.

Shortly after her complaint, reports emerged that Biden called Whelan to assure her that he’s “committed” to bringing Paul back to the US. The tweet below says the government intends to stay in regular contact with families who have loved ones detained overseas.

Paul Whelan landed in Russian custody after an arrest for espionage in 2018. He is serving a 16-year sentence. The former Marine’s sister said she doesn’t want to have to push for a meeting with Biden; she wants to see the support given freely. Elizabeth Whelan previously said it had been months since her family’s last meeting with officials, and she’d been requesting another without any response.

Do you think Biden’s call to Whelan this week is a step in the right direction?
