( – According to the Washington Examiner, numerous U.S. Border Patrol agents and officials attribute a significant decline in personnel morale to the policies of President Joe Biden. The agency, which typically employs over 19,000 agents, reportedly experienced the departure of 4,281 officers between October 2020 and April 2024, coinciding with Biden’s tenure in office. These departures included resignations, mandatory retirements due to age or tenure, and voluntary retirements upon eligibility.

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection indicates a marked increase in early retirements and resignations under the current administration, surpassing the rates observed during the Obama and Trump presidencies. Historically, the agency lost an average of 996 agents each year in the seven years prior to 2020.

A senior Border Patrol official expressed his belief to the Examiner that the morale under the Biden administration has significantly deteriorated, attributing it to the politicization of their duties, particularly the controversial “catch and release” policy. This sentiment was echoed by Matthew Hudak, a recently retired high-ranking official, who criticized what he believed was the demoralizing effect of apprehending migrants only to release them shortly after.

An agent from Arizona shared that the prevailing attitude among the personnel is one of disillusionment, driven by a fear of public scrutiny and disciplinary actions for performing their duties. The senior official emphasized that their primary motivation remains the enforcement of law and prevention of criminal activities and narcotics trafficking.

The tensions within the Border Patrol were publicly highlighted in a leaked video from a January 2022 meeting in Laredo, Texas. During this meeting, Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas were confronted by agents frustrated with the administration’s immigration policies, with complaints about the continuous release of undocumented migrants into the U.S.
