However, he moved himself from the back to the driver’s seat and absconded with the police cruiser, setting in motion a sequence of events that would end in a fatal, high-speed chase. This hair-raising incident was captured on camera.
According to reports, Sanchez III recklessly barreled down Highway 50 at breakneck speeds. His journey then continued into the jurisdiction of Otero County. It was here that the stolen vehicle began to spin wildly out of control. The end of the high-speed escapade came when the stolen police car crashed into a stationary tractor-trailer parked at the side of the road. The crash was so severe that it led to the death of Sanchez III.
The day’s events started around 11 a.m., when Otero County deputies were summoned in response to reports of gunfire. These alarming reports also led state law enforcement agencies to call for additional reinforcements. Their target was the suspect, who was not only evading arrest but also putting lives at risk due to his dangerous driving, which was responsible for a series of road accidents.
After a tense chase, the authorities managed to intercept and stop the stolen vehicle, taking Sanchez III into custody. Upon inspecting the car, they discovered a loaded handgun casually left on the passenger side. In an unexpected twist, Sanchez told the officers that he had been shot by his girlfriend, adding to the chaos and uncertainty of the situation. He appeared confused and claimed he did not fully comprehend the events unfolding around him. He was promptly informed about his arrest and was restrained with handcuffs.
While the officers were in the process of securing the scene and gathering evidence, Sanchez saw an opportunity. He leveraged the distraction, got into the driver’s seat of the unattended police car, and sped off. This act triggered the second and final high-speed chase of the day that ended in tragedy.
In the aftermath of the car crash, Sanchez was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His death marked the grim conclusion of an intense day for law enforcement.
