(ConservativeHub.com) – On Oct. 16 the Guinness World Records announced in a press release that there was a new winner of the “hottest chili pepper” title. The award went to “Pepper X,” which clocks in 2,693,000 Scoville heat units (SHU).

PuckerButt Pepper Co. in Fort Mill, South Carolina owner Ed Currie created this crossbreed pepper. Previously, the title had been held by his “Carolina Reaper” which was clocking in around 1,640,000 SHU. The fact that the scale used is logarithmic means that this new pepper is considered to be three times spicier than the Carolina Reaper.

In comparison, a jalapeno pepper is around 5,000 SHU, and a habanero pepper which is not a hybrid pepper averages around 100,000 SHU. The SHU rating given to Pepper X is higher than the one on bear or pepper spray.

Currie stated that it was not enjoyable to eat Pepper X. According to The Associated Press, he shared he was able to feel the heat for another three and a half hours and that even after that his stomach started cramping. He said that the cramps were horrible and that he was lying flat against a marble wall for close to an hour while being in pain.

Pepper X has been eaten by five people, and the pepper appeared on the Oct. 16 episode of the series “Hot Ones” on YouTube. Sean Evans, the show’s host, referred to Currie as the “sick, twisted mind behind Pepper X.”

It has taken Currie a decade to create Pepper X, and it all started in 2013 when he first won the title for the Carolina Reaper.
