(ConservativeHub.com) – Former President Donald Trump in an interview with Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Tuesday argued that despite the recent endorsement of his presidential campaign by billionaire Elon Musk, he continues to oppose some electric vehicles (EVs).
In the interview, Trump noted that Musk has “never” called for him to stop criticizing electric vehicles and has never asked him to “lay off” EVs. He proceeded to state that he loves Elon Musk, who has endorsed him. However, he argued that he is still opposed to “certain electrics” and while he loves people who want them to be able to have access to electric vehicles, these were for people who did not want to be driving long distances or across the country. He continued to argue that when driving electric vehicles on these types of trips, you would be forced to stop too much.
Trump has previously opposed the subsidies for EVs and the recent initiatives that are pushing for increased manufacturing of electric vehicles within the country. Instead, he has focused his support on gas-powered vehicles and has often attempted to win the support of autoworkers in the Rust Belt.
Trump has also pushed back against the United Auto Workers union, which endorsed Biden’s presidential campaign before he announced he would be dropping out of the race. The union has indicated that it is not rushing to support the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris and that it wants to engage in “fruitful discussions” with her team.
The Biden administration has been pushing for an increase in EVs through several different measures, including tax credits for the purchase of a vehicle. Biden has also set a goal that by 2030 half of new car sales in the country will be for EVs.
Trump mentioned during his interview that Musk said he would be donating $45 million a month to his campaign. This was reported by several outlets before the interview, but Musk later appeared to distance himself from these reports, stating that he is donating at a “lower level.”
